Tila Tequila and the Fashionable Mullet

July 2, 2008 · 3 Comments

I don’t have much time to write as I am currently engaged in a Tila Tequila marathon on MTV. It is the finale and it is beautiful to know that Tila (Yes, we are on a first name basis) will finally find love… for the second time on national television. I guess there is just something about trashy television that makes me want to blog. Am I the only one who has such urges?

Okay so I lied, I am not watching trashy TV, but I am sure millions of other kids are indulging in the likes of Tila Tequila and Laguna Beach right now. It is the sad reality of our millennial generation. People are so wrapped up in Miley Cyrus’s alter ego to realize she is just a downtrodden duplicitous daughter of B-Ray who made the mullet fashionable in 1992. We are living in a sad, sad world. Now I would be lying if I said I don’t frequently indulge in such entertainment, matter of fact I do on a regular basis; however, I can safely say I know when enough is enough. The problem with society’s obsessions is that they have become vices. Consumption should be the buzz word of the century. We are consumed by such vices, while at the same time consuming copious amounts of fast food. We really just do it all here in the good ol’ U.S.A!

Amazingly my life hasn’t been completely consumed (yet). I have found time to augment the reality TV with real life activities. Contrary to popular belief there are youth, like myself, who do a lot of productive things. Apathy is way over played (and quite frankly irrelevant in my opinion, how can you be apathetic if you are so thoroughly invested in pop culture?). All I am saying is give us a chance! We (being the youth) do care and we are doing productive things. I have a job. I intern. I have a large role in the Students for Barack Obama Campaign. I am on my school’s board. I am a brother and a halfway decent friend. But more importantly, no one is telling me to do; I do it all because I care.  People keep saying youth are apathetic but I thoroughly disagree. True passion is a powerful thing and when you combine such conviction with motivated youth there is no stopping to what they do. So give us a chance and watch what we are capable of!
